This album is by leaps and bounds better than the garbage that it topping the charts now. I'm very excited that Leona's CD finally has landed in America; I have been following her since the X Factor. I think her voice is just amazing. I replayed her first song since it was leaked. Given this, I think my favorite song on the track was The First Time I saw you face. I was surprised with the turnout of the CD. I really was hoping that her covers of Summertime, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and Lovin You would be on the CD even as bonuses because it really showed her voice. I think the CD was made to anticipate the current market with how music is overdone with background music, but she is really in a different class that is timeless. Given such high expectations and the difference in the music she sang in the X factor(more ballads, no RB), I was a little perplexed when the CD came out, but I do like Here I am and Whatever it takes. I think maybe they tried to avoid the way some great singers is currently stereotyped with saccharine love songs. Sad though, cause I love those too. A lot of the songs were really bittersweet. Anyway, Yaaay Leona. I do hope they release the other songs though...like they do with the "American Idol" series. Leona Lewis' debut CD is probably one of the best CD's of 2008 so far. The CD is one beautiful track, after another, after another. This CD can not be listened to just one, but continually. The songs on Spirit showcase her outstanding vocal abilities. The songs are beautiful and she sings with such raw emotion. I believe that this is just the beginning of things for Leona Lewis and we will be hearing from her for years to come. Bleeding Love was the only song I liked on this album. The rest of it seems to be standard pop music with no substance. Her live performance on American Idol was lackluster as well. She seemed stiff and uncomfortable. I am beginning to get weary of all these "Contest winner" singers that people like Simon Cowell promote. I THINK THIS CD WAS PRETTY GOOD. NOT ALL SONGS ARE AS GOOD AS THE MAIN TWO THAT WE HEAR ON THE RADIO.UK singer and songwriter Leona Lewis will release her debut album, Spirit, in America on April 8, 2008. For the first time, Clive Davis and Simon Cowell teamed up to sign Lewis to J Records/SyCo Music (Cowell's joint venture with Sony BMG), and are both actively involved in the recording process for Spirit. Lewis, a 22-year-old London native and winner of the hit TV show the X Factor, a British talent show, has oken all-time sales records there with Spirit entering the album chart at Number One and becoming Britain's fastest-selling debut ever. Spirit has scanned more than two million copies worldwide since its release in November. In addition, Spirit's lead-off single "Bleeding Love" -- co-written and produced by OneRepublic frontman Ryan "Alias" Tedder -- was the U.K.'s best-selling single of 2007, claiming the Number One spot for seven weeks. Ushering in 2008, Leona received four prestigious Brit Award nominations, the UK equivalent of the Grammy Awards. Leona is currently in the studio recording two and new tracks for the U.S. release of Spirit - "Forgive Me" by singer/songwriter superstar Akon and "Misses Glass" from the cutting edge producer/writers Madd Scientist and Rock City. Spirit is a mix of fresh pop and RB, filled with "songs with a contemporary edge," as Lewis puts it, ranging from soulful up-tempo numbers ("I'm You," "The Best You Never Had," and "Whatever It Takes," which Lewis co-wrote) to ballads ("Better in Time," "I Will Be," and "The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face" -- a song that Roberta Flack made famous). Tracks were written and produced by an array of top-notch hit-makers, including Tedder, singer/songwriters Akon and Ne-Yo, songwriters Josh Alexander and Billy Steinberg, and songwriter/producers Dallas Austin, Stargate, J.R. Rotem, and Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald -- all of whom have worked with some of the biggest names in pop. In addition to gracing the covers of UK fashion publications like Harper's Bazaar, US media are touting Leona as the artist to watch in 2008: People Magazine labels her "the UK's hottest star in an "Introducing" piece," Vogue presents her in their "People Are Talking About - The Vogue 25 Cultural Highlights of 2008" and Entertainment Weekly declares her one of "8 To Watch in 2008." She can be compared to Mariah and others because of how good she is already. Simon Cowell does know what he is doing and this proves it. One of the prettiest songs is: "Footprints in the Sand" one of my favorites. If you ever heard her you will want to know who that is so that you can purchase her music. Aha, now I understand why Simon is so tough. Simon knows exactly what he is looking for on American Idol or his European versions of AI. He wants the entire package and when he sees it, he grabs it, that's it in a nutshell. Simon wants the best and will not settle for less. He got the best when Leona Lewis came along. Leona's voice is a voice we will be listening to for generations to come. She is one class act, classy voice, classy looks, classy dress - she's got it all, and now I will no longer get upset when Simon tells it like it is because he knows the "best" when he sees it and he knows who will make it and who won't. Simon Cowell Is a Genius. He picked up on a Star (Leona) before she gave up on the "got to know somebody" system. I bought from the English market before anyone here knew of Leona because of YouTube. Simon...got a job? Congrats to Leona, Simon, and Clive. My wife loves Leona. 27 July 2007 She's a gorgeous girl, but her demeanor is just darling... she's very humble and soft spoken, but boy can she belt out a song! All three judges praised her, and Simon said that finally Britain has a girl singer as good as Whitney, Mariah or Christina., and that she is the best contestant he has ever had on any of the shows! Wow, from him that's remarkable. I prefer her voice over all of their voices, so look for LEONA. Simon said she's going to be a worldwide star Louis agreed. I was a little disappointed that her first CD single is "A moment like this," seems like they could have come up with something more original, but I like her a lot more than Kelly Clarkson. She's very sweet and humble.2007 debut CD single from the winner of British television's X Factor talent show (similar to American Idol and both feature Simon Cowell as a judge!). The X Factor has yet again been the biggest TV story this year with viewing figures of over 10m every week. The contestants and judges have dominated UK airwaves over the past few months. Lewis' , 'A Moment Like This', a cover of Kelly Clarkson's American Idol smash, is a fantastic offering for X Factor fans. 'A Moment Like This' is coupled with 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. Yet, there's nothing spectacular about this singer. Sure, right now there's a Leona craze, so everyone who's not on board is considered crazy. Well, some of us are harder to ainwash. She's not a horrible singer, but my neighbor, who sings as she cooks, sings way better than Leona. She just needs Simon. BUY THIS ALBUM....it is amazing and worth every penny. You will not find yourself skipping over any of the songs on this one... A sensational new singer and she has a voice for the world to hear. Shes not Whitney, Celine, Mariah or Jordin but she got a voice. She is Leona Lewis. The song Bleeding Love lyrics sends chills through my body with that voice . I dedicate this song to my husband, even though people always like to give there opinion about a relationship or do whatever to discourage it from happening. I found faith and love from him who knew the truth of me. He loves me still 20 years later. Just follow your heart. Her debut cd SPIRIT is scheduled for release April 8, 2008. Newcomer Leona Lewis definitely shows that she has a little bit more in her inner voice than artists that have shown to be more about hype like Britney Spears and American Idol victor Jordin Sparks. Her debut single Bleeding Love, the first single from her U.S. debut album, Spirit, is a strong ballad that carries simply from the heart and the mind. She has a very deep voice, that is a good debut. Unlike powerhouses like Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson who've made so-so singles, this is one that works well for any listener. Considering the track sound very good, I hope that Spirit can work this well for Leona Lewis for American listeners. She sounds like she can be a knockout. Song: B In a world of overrated rap and hip-hop artists and pop stars whose personal lives overshadow their music, the lovely Leona Lewis is a eath of fresh and much needed air! After becoming the 2006 winner of Britain's X-Factor (the British equivalent of American Idol) the exotic beauty unveils her first single, "Bleeding Love", the lead track for her inaugural cd, "Spirit". The set of songs have become Britain's fastest selling debut cd and the single has been number one in several countries. Now, Ms. Lewis is set to conquer America. And what better way to do so than release a great song, with solid, stirring vocals! Ms. Lewis reminds me of a pre-diva Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston. Her first single takes me back to the first time I heard "Vision of Love" by Carey and was amazed by her vocal ability. There was a sincerity in Mariah's songs then, as there is in Lewis' now. Let's hope that with the upcoming praise and awards she is bound to receive, Ms. Lewis can manage to keep her feet on the ground and continue to give her fans great music and impressive singles. If you are a fan of Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion or good pop/R B music, "Bleeding Love" will be a single you will enjoy. It gives us a taste of what to expect from Lewis' upcoming cd, which in America will have two additional songs. Highly recommended!UK CD pressing of the first single to be released from X Factor winner Leona Lewis's highly anticipated debut album. 'Bleeding Love' was written and produced by LA's hottest emerging talent, Ryan Tedder, whose credits include Mary J Blige, JLO, Timbaland and Natasha Bedingfield. Leona Lewis was the first X Factor winner with international potential. As Simon Cowell simply put it: "She's mesmerizing. I literally couldn't believe how good she was." This reviewer agrees with previous writer Keehn in giving a 3.5 rating to "Johnny Eager". JE falls short of noir or true crime superiority: As the film opens, Robert Taylor is a hard working cabdriver, meeting with his avuncular parole officer (A.J. Verne) and trying to stay straight after a spell in the Big House. It quickly-all too quickly-becomes clear that the cab is a front. Taylor is actually operating a dog track! This reviewer deemed RT a bit too debonair to play a hood-or to be pushing a hack. (That is an old New York term!). One also might wonder how the real life Law could fail to catch the ruse. Are the cops asleep? Is anybody watching? Credibility is a flaw with JE. That aside, there are some solid points to this MGM release. Production values are high; scenes flow smoothly. This is a professional movie, capably directed by Mervyn LeRoy with gloss, sophistication and polish. The fast pace may conceal the holes in the plot. In fact, the production virtually overshadows the cast. Taylor is a real operator here, smoothly pulling off 2 mean and cynical setups on Edward Arnold and Lana Turner. These accolades are not enough to carry the movie. If we remember Taylor from "Ivanhoe" and "Knights of the Round Table" it is difficult to picture the guy as a paroled con, masking as a cab driver while running a dog track. On a positive note, most other reviews are positive. Keep scrolling to get a fuller round of opinions on "Johnny Eager". The untamed personality of Johnny Eager always finds a door for his own ambitions and nothing is capable to stop him in this pursuit. But what it really nourishes this early Noir resides in the characters: Jeff hartnett as the lawyer who believed in him ,making feel himself as a perverse and morbid human being; on the other hand we have the angelical figure of that sociology student Lisbeth Bard who is mesmerized by that underworld razor' edge and the excitement it generates. So in this fast attempt to climb the higher mountain, Johnny threatens the owner of a nightclub and realizes that Lisbeth is the daughter of John Benson Farrell , the district attorney who sent him to prison. This is according him his golden situation, because it's not easy to him to make Lisbeth falls in love with him and at the same time to become her accomplice, thanks to a very clever trick in which one of his partners has been supposed murdered by Lisbeth after a pretended fight among them. But the noblest side of Johnny simply remains as a claw in his conscious, due she will be shocked due that incident. So his redemption will consist about trying to convince her all was a fake, no matter the prize he had to pay, for her to recover his mental health. At first sight it appears as simple melodrama, but there is much to explore beneath the script. One of my favorite cult Noir films of the Forties. In this excellent, if unoriginal film noir from 1941, Robert Taylor stars as Johnny Eager, a well-known racketeer (and ex-convict) who conceals his criminal activities by reporting regularly to his parole officer as well as masquerading as a humble taxi driver. He shares a large penthouse apartment with his best friend Jeff Hartnett (Van Heflin), an alcoholic whose offbeat philosophy annoys those around him, including Johnny. One day Eager meets a pretty sociology student, Lisbeth Bard (Lana Turner), and although she was engaged to another man she falls in love with Eager. Eager finds out that Lisbeth's stepfather is the district attorney (Edward Arnold), who's determined to put him behind bars forever. Johnny encourages Lisbeth by pretending to love her, while at the same time he cooks up his most dubious scheme yet. He sets up a fake homicide and convinces Lisbeth that she's shot and killed a man, and thus he has all he needs to blackmail the district attorney. Eventually, however, Johnny realizes that he IS in love with Lisbeth, and he finally shows that he has a conscience. He tells Lisbeth about the staged homicide and even introduces her to the man she "killed". Johnny's former allies are planning a double-cross, though, and are in no mood to let him start a new and happy life with Lisbeth. Seeing that there is no escape for him, Johnny unselfishly sends her away to safety with her former fiance. Then Johnny sets out to settle the score with his enemies, and a vicious shootout erupts in the street. I won't spoil the ending. "Johnny Eager" was predictable and followed the standard formula for 1930's-40's gangster films, yet the first-rate performances and the impressive action scenes (especially the shootout at the end) make this stand out among other crime films of the era. Like 1940's "Johnny Apollo", this movie was proof that the gangster genre was merging well with film noir. While the chemistry between Robert Taylor and Lana Turner was electric, the scene-stealer was clearly Van Heflin, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor with his marvelous performance. In an era where movie drunkards were almost always portrayed with laughable, over-the-top acting, Heflin underplayed it to perfection. Other film noir roles for Heflin included "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" and "Possessed". Bottom line, if you like watching classics with sexy "dames", tough gangsters, and plenty of murder then this one's for you! I was interested in seeing this movie because of Van Heflin's Best Supporting Actor award. I came away with an appreciation of an award well-deserved. Heflin supports an interesting leading cast of Robert Taylor and Lana Turner. This is one of those on-screen romances that seems to generate a fair amount of electricity. The movie moves along at a pretty good clip and has a fairly decent though generally predictable plot. Taylor is a pretty smooth ex-con who's secretly back in the business. Behind the congenial exterior we soon discover a man who cares about no one but himself. The closest thing he has to a friend is the generally ine iated Heflin who spouts philosophical advise in between drinks. The movie has some interesting twists and turns (especially one involving a particular police officer) but it eventually flows into the standard plot format; a power struggle, the discovery of love when it's too late, the noble sacrifice, etc. It would be hard to give anything away that you wouldn't have seen coming ahead of time. The acting is pretty good and, although Robert Taylor is no Robert Mitchum, he's still a pretty smooth operator. I'm glad I watched "Johnny Eager" but I doubt I'll watch it again. MGM produced this well-written, well-produced gangster saga, a type of film that was very unusual for the studio. As the alcoholic, self-loathing, philosophizing buddy of Johnny Eager Robert Taylor), Heflin steals the show. He plays his role with great intensity and complexity, making his performance one of the most deserved Best Supporting Actor Oscars in the history of the Academy Awards. His crying scenes are enough to choke a person up, and his possible suggestion of a homo erotic attraction to Eager is unique in films of this era. It's unfortunate that Heflin's subsequent roles and performances were generally dull. This actor needed roles that put him emotionally on the edge and exploited his intensity. But at least in Johnny Eager, Heflin set a standard for screen acting that remains a role model to this day. Robert Taylor plays his scenes with Heflin with some dramatic tension and a hint of subtext, while still remaining comfortably within the confines of a handsome Hollywood leading man. Turner delivers her lines very artificially, coming across as insincere, and her face seems incapable of expressing emotion. Beautiful she is, but given the taut script, the director had the potential of eliciting less formulaic playing from her. Luckily, the rest of the cast is excellent -especially Edward Arnold and Robert Sterling. Watch this one and you won't be disappointed. Heflin's performance is worth it all BoomerangBoomerangBoomerangBoomerangBoomerangBoomerang ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() price:(2002-01-01) 【Does anyone know why or when?.......】☆☆☆☆☆ 【It comes back at you again and again!】☆☆☆☆ 【I can't wait for this to come out on DVD】☆☆☆☆☆ 【A killing in a small town】☆☆☆☆ 【Part of the flowering of post war films】☆☆☆☆ This is an excellent movie, seen on TV years ago, and I pre-ordered from Amazon along with other soon-to-be-released film noir DVDs. Suddenly Boomerang had disappeared from my pre-order statement when notified by Amazon that items were getting ready for shipment(?)!! Also, in a newly released film noir DVD just received yesterday (9/06), enclosed was a Fox flyer advertising Boomerang. Does anyone know why the DVD was pulled and, also, if and when it will be released for purchase? This dramatization of a factual incident opens in a quiet Connecticut town where a kindly priest is murdered while waiting at a street corner. The citizens are horrified and demand action from the police. All of the witnesses identify John Waldron, a nervous out-of-towner, as the killer. Although Waldron vehemently denies the crime, no one will believe him. District Attorney Henry Harvey is then put on the case and faces political opposition in his attempt to prove Waldron's innocence. This is a absolute manipulative movie. Manipulative in the good sense as it keeps you spellbound throughout, and has you wondering whodunit? It also does a very splendid rendition by Dana Andrews as the attorney who honors and respects justice and fair play, and not getting their man/woman. Probably something wasn't thought too much of back in 1947 a prosecuter who ends up defending a man accussed of murder. A forerunning plot that still doesn't see too much of the light of day now. Elia Kazan's third directing effort was "Boomerang!" - a solid murder drama that explores the sometimes polluting effect that politics exerts on the legal system. In a small town, a beloved pastor is murdered in the street, shocking the local residents. Dana Andrews plays the prosecuting lawyer trying the case: clearly the biggest assignment of his career. A shifty ex-serviceman (the talented Arthur Kennedy) is indicted and appears unquestionably guilty. But is he? Everyone involved in the case seems to have an ulterior motive, and Andrews' character is determined to see justice prevail. The Oscar-nominated story was inspired by a true case; Andrews portrays Homer S. Cummings, who later became U.S. Attorney General in the FRD administration. Despite being a satisfying crime drama, "Boomerang!" is a relatively neglected film, especially among Kazan's outstanding canon. Why has it been ignored? All aspects of the film essentially are good to very good, including the acting and direction. Perhaps the film has been hurt by its matter-of-fact tone and slow-building plot; indeed, the film may a bit uninvolving for some audiences, at least until an undeniably thrilling final court scene. In addition, the stars (Dana Andrews, Jane Wyatt, Lee J. Cobb) are not marquee names; however, given its true life origins and the semi-documentary style, the movie actually benefits from a lack of star power. Finally, Kazan's other film that year also overshadowed "Boomerang!" - the multiple Oscar winner, "Gentleman's Agreement." Overall, "Boomerang!" is an enjoyable foray into 1940s crime dramas that is well worth a look. Hopefully it will be released soon on DVD, allowing a larger audience to find this film. Dana Andrews had just appeared in the acclaimed Best Days of Our Lives, when Director Elia Kazan lured him to do this film. It is a fine piece of work as Dana Andrews plays a moral man in a political and moral quagmire of an ordinary American town. The documentary style was often repeated, but Kazan got it right first time.pIt is a feast of fine acting with the camera moving from one small story to another. There are so many good actors in this film, but Lee J. Cobb delivers the best as the old time police officer.pThis film was made just before the HUAC investigation of Hollywood which drove out social criticism of American life. It is an example of where Hollywood was going before the investigation strangled the life from Hollywood. The Best Days of Our Lives was another example of this type of film. It is direct and honest.pThe choice of ending where it is not made clear about the killer makes it all the more interesting. I have no idea why this film is not readily available on video. It is a small gem that repays viewing after viewing.
